Dixieland ProclamationThe acoustic is fantastic on this song. The melody and your voice are great for this age old story. Good work on the whole track. I like the background vocals coming in the most to thicken everything on the chorus.
In MY OpinionGreetings, Thank you for choosing me to review your work, I count it an honor to be included in such a task. My hat is off to you and anyone willing to step out and share their gift, talent and love of music to the public. Be it a musician, singer, song writer, actor and so-on. I myself, via 40 some years of experience in the fields, on the road, in the studio, radio, TV, video, and management, consider myself to be a seasoned musician, singer, song writer, studio-sound tech/engineer/ owner/operator, stage manager, find it sometimes hard/difficult and perhaps not even fair to sit in a seat, voicing My Opinion concerning another's creative efforts. Especially in certain genres of music I am not all that familiar with concerning very important elements that make up and meet the required standards to justify the various levels of ratings and grades. So, in saying ALL that, I will limit myself to MY Opinion concerning the quality of the work according to My ears, and the standards I have been familiarized with thru-out the years. I hold to the old - saying " Beauty Is In The EAR of The Beholder ... LOL. The sound quality of the recording over-all is very crisp and bright and clear, I really enjoyed all the guitar work and chord progression.Again I urge you to think about a solo break to step away from vocals for a short period. Vocals are smooth and natural. The mix levels let me know who was still in charge of this song. Very easy to sit back and listen to for a Christmas song. Could easy be done thru-out the year. Great message. I mean no offense in any part, I myself take all feedback and use it as a tool toward my next project. I pray you feel the same way. Either way, I say to you, keep doing what you do, keep kicking and enjoying what you do. I tell folks all the time for many years. When it stops being FUN, then it's time to stop, and stand back and think about what we are doing, why we are doing it, how we are doing it, what we and others are getting out it. Is it what we want, and how we want it. IF NOT. what are willing to do from there? Thank you again for asking MY OPINION. Johnny
Simple, straightforward, and repetitiveJust finished listening closely to Trevor Toews' recording of "Come and See the King". It is straightforward country and western, with a simple 1-4-5 chord progression, inviting Christmas celebrants to come to the manger. Someone once said all you need to write a country song is 3 chords and the truth, and this one qualifies perfectly! Trevor's lead vocal is pleasant and friendly, nothing fancy. The ensemble is drums, bass, and rhythm guitar only, no lead instruments. From a songwriting standpoint, I like the general idea of the song, but not the structure. The verses and the choruses have exactly the same melody, and with 5 verses and 3 choruses, this simple melody is repeated 8 times. That's too much for most listeners. Once the songwriter has the words, it's not hard to cast the choruses and the verses in different tunes, and this helps keep the listener's attention. A bridge can work wonders in this regard also, providing yet a 3rd melodic pattern for the listener. The addition of a key change helps some, but by the time it comes around in this recording, the melody pattern has already repeated times, so it's a little too late. The ending is a nice surprise, adding an interesting, well-executed wrinkle for those like me who have stuck around. I have a couple of quibbles about the lyrics: (1) in one of the verses, the lyrics say there were 3 wise men. Scripture is not specific on this point. All we know is, there were at least two. The 3 wise men image is handed down to us by ancient tradition. (2) In the final chorus, the word "heart" rhymes with the word "heart". There's no rule against this, of course, but it's usually considered bad form. Again, these are just quibbles, offered as one songwriter to another, because I see the value in your work, and want to invite you to improve on it.
