Soulja-Cona Takin' OvA~! / About
Alfuseni Conateh, (born March 16, 1984), better known by his stage name Soulja-Cona Takin’ OvA~!, is a Gambian-Born American Musician/Actor/Video Director/Music Producer/Graphic Designer/Author/Song, Video & Movie-Script Writer. Cona has recorded 10 Home Studio Recording Albums, making him one of the best ever ready Artists of our time. He is a potential threat to many and a talented gift to few, his Hometown The Gambia, named him one of the Best Entertainers in 2004. His solo debut Home Studio Recording Album called Dreams Come True was produced, composed, recorded by him and was released in the US via (expired link) in 2009.
LilCona, as he was called in those early years of 2001, began his career, as a Roadie, Manager and DJ for the Contemporary Gambian Hip-Hop Group X-Soljaz Clan, eventually branching off as a solo artist. The theme of most of Solja-Cona’s songs revolves round mayhem, poverty, economic, traditional, social, spiritual and commercial conflicts.
Both his parents, whose ideals are reflected in his music, are Gambian civil servants, his Father Mr. Swaebou Conateh, graduated from Kansas University in the early 60s and is an active Gambian Journalist/Editor/Proprietor of News & Report Weekly Magazine, and his Mother, Mrs. Sukai Badjan Conateh, practiced nursing at Westfield Clinic, in the early 70s and is now a House Nurse/Pharmacist/Businesswoman.
During the former part of his career, before leaving his country in Feb. 2005 to go to England to study Banking & Finance/Music Technology, Solja-Cona Takin’ OvA~!, was a vocal participant in the so-called X-Soljaz/Harlem ****** Hip-Hop Beef 2004, in The Gambia and was involved in many conflicts with other Gambian Rappers, Producers, Promoters & DJs etc.
Upon the request of his return, by his Father from England in Sept. 2007 to help him business wise, Solja-Cona was also offered to come home and work for the Gambia Radio & Television Services (GRTS). By then the so-called beef was awakened but with serious consequences this time which involved TV/Radio-Station Director Generals most notably Momodou Sanyang, Lamin Manga and the Gambia Government/Army due to the fact that the television job offered was not given and the radio job was not paying or letting him play American Hip-Hop. With all these obstacles, his group also quit doing music and deserted him, which led to the demise of the X-Soljaz Clan, and the rise of Solja-Cona’s solo music career as a one man soldier, fighting for his music dream to stay alive. In the end, The Gambia Government took sides revoked his employment and kicked him to the curb, which led to a 1 year ghost spree in the life of Solja-Cona Takin’ OvA~!, with little or no money, but just music as his talented gift and curse, he kept his head down, spent most of his time in his room, composing, recording and planning his next moves.
After completing his first Solo-Album Project, (DREAMZ COME TRUE), he was stabbed 5 times by an unidentified Gambian soldier in the early hours of August, 10, 2008 at Palm Rima Beach, the night prior to his first video shoot for the DCT Album single called “I go by the name Solja-Cona”. He was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital 4 hours later to be treated for his wounds “waist, right hand, left knee, right calf and shin” after losing gallons of blood. He recovered 2 weeks later, went to Senegal 3 months later to do some soul searching, he came back to the Gambia and after applying for a student visa, he was granted a 2 years student visa on 20th January 2009, to study Mass Communication/Media Studies at Crowder College in Neosho, Kansas.
On March 16th, 2009, the day he turned 25 he left The Gambia, his homeland and came to America for the first time to fulfil his music dream with two suitcases one full of clothes and the other full of music equipment. Three months later Dreamz Come True was released.
After five years since coming to America, Soulja-Cona Takin’ OvA~! became an Exclusive Controversy Records Artist under a five year contract that consists of 10 Quality Studio recording album projects, which he already had in his possession and recently re-recorded the first Album project called “PEACE BE THE JOURNEY”, which was released on the 13th September 2014, but, due to the lack of creative control, promotional campaign and financial support etc Soulja-Cona Takin’ OvA~! voided his Exclusive Controversy Records Contract and decided to move on to greener pastures.
