What is the meaning of our band's name?

"Sojourners" are people who travel to places, often making temporary stops and with explorative intents.

Sojourners, the band, has been on a musical journey of many stops, propelled by aspirations for creativity, adventure, and discovery. Over the years, the band has explored music of numerous chronological eras — taking cues from European and Chinese classical traditions as well of more modern genres spanning from Rhythm and Blues, Rock, Jazz and Canto-pop. By sojourning, the Sojourners wishes to create a musical travelogue that is both entertaining to its audiences and enriching the cultural context of popular music into the future

How, When and where "Sojourners" was formed?

The ”Sojourners" was originally formed in Boston, MA in the 1970's by Alex Wan and Ted Wan. The two brothers are natives of Hong Kong and grew up in a musical family with deep roots in Cantonese opera. Instead of following the family tradition, Alex and Ted were drawn to Western pops in their teens and started a R&R band in Hong Kong. In 1968, they immigrated to the link. and settled in Boston. Since then, the brothers Wan have continued to pursue their musical passion as leaders of a number of musical groups and performed professionally. While they studied at the Berkelee School of Music, they met and performed with many talented musicians from all corners of the globe. These friends and colleagues contributed to the early line ups of the Sojourners and helped the band to quickly develop a local following and gain popularity. Today, the band continues to draw talents and inspirations from this group of musicians.

What are Sojourners' Signature Sounds?

Alex started composing and arranging his original music in the mid 1970's that gave birth to his style of improvisation-based fusion of Jazz and Rock. In any given Sojourner performance, it behooves the audience to predict what may the next song sound like. More often than not, it would be a mix of Rock, Jazz, Classical elements presented with varying emphasis, moods, and texture. The use of instruments may also be surpassingly and delightfully diverse, ranging from avant garde electronic instruments, acoustic 6- and 12-string guitars, violins, cellos, double basses, to Chinese classical instruments such as Erhu or Guzheng. One distinguishing characteristic of the Sojourner is that the lyrics of its songs have always been in Cantonese. The band’s complex, yet fluid, musical improvisation and its long “smoking” instrument solos have captivated audiences across continents regardless of their nature tongues.
