About Whiskey Still Folk Band and Liam Davis

Whiskey Still have added Liam Davis to their show ...RAISED ON SONGS AND STORIES..profile belaw

PAUL HOLOHAN
is bass player & singer with "Whiskey Still" Paul also plays keyboard & is an excellent (expired link) background is varied, but most notably took shape in the vibrant 60s pop/rock scene of Dublin's hip & trendy. Paul was originally a member of the poll topping 60,s pop group The Bye Laws.
In the 60s, "The Byelaws" were actually
managed by the same management company as "The Dubliners" & after his time with "The Byelaws"
had ended, Paul moved to Canada with his own band "Lola and The Gipsies" who's extensive tours
took in nightclubs, theatres & prisons (yes, prisons! ..move over Johnny Cash!) in the (expired link). & Canada
alike. On his return from Canada, in the late 70s, Paul made a foray back into to the Irish music scene
which felt like a return to his roots as he grew up playing Irish music on his very first instrument, the
piano accordion

BRENDAN LEESON - has bucket loads of experience in the ballad business. He started with "The
Weavers" back in the 60s & since then has been in "The Quare Fellas" featuring Patsy Watchorn &
Sean McGuinness, which later became a little known trad outfit called "The Dublin City Ramblers"
Brendan also founded "The Buskers" with Paul Furey & Davey Arthur, with whom he toured England,
Scotland & Canada throughout the 70s. Paul Furey & Davey Arthur joined up with "The Furey
Brothers" & the rest is a story for another day. From there, Brendan joined "Rakish Paddy" in the 80s,
which I personally believe, in their day, were the best ballad group in Dublin with Sean Og McKenna
(Barneys brother) on tenor banjo, Gerry Crilly on guitar, Noel Carroll also on guitar & Brendan
Leeson, himself on 5 string Bangp

JOE TOOLAN,
Is one of the finest fiddle players playing today, born in Dublin, commenced his musical education at
the age of 6 at the Waltons School of Music. After developing a keen interest in Traditional Irish Music
he began lessons with the renowned fiddle teacher, Terry Crehan, nephew of the great Junior
Crehan, while also continuing his Classical Music studies at the College of Music, Chatham Row. He
participated in many Fleadh Ceoil, Sloghadh and Oireachtas competitions throughout his youth with a
string of successes and has attained All Ireland Championship status. This led in part to his selection
on Comhaltas Tours of Ireland and America. He also performed and toured extensively with other
groups to such places as Lorient and throughout the USA, Canada, UK and Europe. Joe has also
been teaching music for over 25 years and brought many students to All Ireland Championship level.
He has also given many master classes through the years including teaching at the Willie Clancy
Summer School. Joe has performed and recorded. with many well regarded artists including Hot
House Flowers, RTE and Ronnie Drew among others.
LIAM DAVIS
Liam is a well-known singer and musician who has been involved in the Irish and international music
scene for over 20 years, playing music in many Irish venues, as well as concerts in Scotland, France
and Australia, that range across different genre, Liam, as Lead singer, was a founder member of the
traditional band Drantán, alongside the late Uilleann Piper and composer Darach de Bruin (died
2012), classical & traditional Flautist Gerry Byrne (died 2017) and Liam’s son ( Liam Óg), on guitar,
together producing fine music at home and abroad. After many years of playing together at sessions
and gigs in Ireland they produced their first CD -Tuas Maith in 2008, which was followed by regular
concert appearances at the Irvine Folk Festival, sharing the stage with well-known musicians such as
Johnny Silvo & Eric Bogle and Whiskey Still. Liam met Paul & Brendan of Whiskey Still, during these
concerts in Irvine, and since 2012 has appeared with them, as a featured singer / Bodhrán player at
Irish gigs in The Three Rock and other venues around Ireland.
In the 90’s Liam was one of ten Irish musicians that were invited to provide music at a Showcase
Ireland event in Besancon, France, for nine days, playing Irish music, with fellow musicians, including
Johnny Moynihan of Planxty fame, Irish dancers, and members of French Ballet troupe. They
provided twice daily shows to audiences, for the nine days. It is of no surprise to learn that Liam
comes from a longstanding musical and stage family that goes back to the early 1900s, with
appearances in Dublin theatres, including The Old Theatre Royal.
