Rick Gethin of “Music in Motion Columbus” and the “Cat Club Podcast” gave The Molars’ debut EP, “Cavity Search,” a listen and jotted down his first impressions.
1. “Hey, Hey, Everybody:”
Whether kicking off an album or getting the party started for a live show, this song sets the tone. Strap in and hold on tight…
2. “Stockholm Surfer:”
This is pure and simple what a classic surf guitar is supposed to sound like. It evokes the total immersive feel of being on a beach in SoCal in the early 1960’s.
3. “Rabble Rouser:”
If Jan & Dean and Ramones had a love child, this upbeat surf punk groove would surely be the result. The band melds 1960’s surf with 1970’s punk seamlessly.
4. “(expired link).:”
While staying true to the traditional version of this gem, The Molars manage to give it an updated, rockabilly groove that just works well.
5. “Love Me, I’m Popular:”
The chugging shuffle of this slow burner incorporates a western (country) feel, while the vocals have a slightly sinister edge to them that increases the tension within the song in an eerily wonderful way.

About The Molars
When veteran musicians join forces, the result can be powerful. This happened when guitarist/vocalist Jimmy Razor and bassist/vocalist John Colarossi renewed their love of punk and formed The Molars. Enlisting lead guitarist Mike Ballon and drummer Shane Olson, a band evolved with a raw and greasy sound that combines the best elements of Rockabilly, Garage, Glam, and most importantly, Punk Rock.
The Molars understand the stylistic lineage between 1950’s Rockabilly and late 1970’s Punk. They draw liberally from both styles and much in between. A typical show will feature vintage classics from the likes of Eddie Cochran or Little Richard, given a dirtier and faster treatment. Also heard are chestnuts from the post-1977 era from the likes of The Ramones or The Clash. To the Molars, Punk and Rockabilly are nothing more than good old fashioned Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Do not think that The Molars are simply a covers band. Both John Colarossi and Jimmy Razor are songwriters, adding their original tunes to the mix. This bonus has allowed The Molars to achieve a shared goal; to make an album of all new songs.
That album is an EP called "Cavity Search." Available on CD, 7", and MP3, it contains one song each by Colarossi and Razor, along with a Punk reimagining of the folk classic, "Big Rock Candy Mountain."
One thing stands true: The Molars take great pride in being a Greasy Rock ‘n’ Roll Band.
