In her glowing review of Sunday Shoes latest album, This Side of Heaven, Julie Carr from ChristianMusic.com wrote, “The sound of Sunday Shoes can be found at the intersection where rock, blues, soul, jazz and gospel collide. The lyrics are visual, fresh, and reality based…telling stories of life, love, loss, and redemption from a Christian perspective”
Danny and Dan, the duo that comprises the band, say it this way…”Sunday is the day when dead dreams were reborn. Shoes always were and still remain the most basic of delivery systems. We try to create and deliver songs that do what Jesus did.. .Give hope to someone whose hope is crushed, show the exit sign to someone trapped in an emotional prison, bring a little joy to someone whose heart is bleeding.”
Sunday Shoes is the continuing story of what happens when two prodigal sons who love blues rock and vintage guitars meet the brother they never had and take their music and newly found faith and hit the road. Who somewhere along the way, get adopted by Celebrate Recovery, an international faith-based recovery organization. Founded at Saddleback Church in California by a recovered functional alcoholic John Baker, CR is a group of "wounded healers" who have helped thousands of people of all ages struggling with their own hurts, hang-ups, and habits.
As a result of their partnership with this steadily growing group, Sunday Shoes has had to put on their traveling shoes. Over the past ten years, Danny and Dan have had the time of their lives performing their roots-rock style of music and sharing the story of their recovery at hundreds of concert events, conferences, and churches across the U.S. According to Danny Van, the bands gravel-voiced front man, "Every time we try to figure God out we're wrong. Now we just show up, get out of the way and let God do his thing”. From the feedback at a recent concert, “God’s Thing” seems to include people getting encouraged..."They helped me feel joy on a down day." According to Danny, “That’s why we do this”.
