When Equilibrium Between Folklore and Metal Music Arises

That's something that needs to be said with no fear, is not easy to get a good balance between both genres of music. When there are not equilibrium is a mess. In Strange New Down I feel that perfect balance and it is real amazing. One example here in Latin America is Sepultura (Trash Metal/Samba), in EEUU we can talk about Alice in Chains (Rock/Country) that have that fussion in equilibrium. Strange New Down is perfect in this aspect but too en hi quality sound and composition. It feel like navigate in coldest oceans. Cartridge

yes

Without a Sailreview. this song is a strictly metal piece in the highest sense of the word. everything sounds in metal style as I said everything recalls the metal genre. personally it is not my favorite genre but I can give you a musical judgment that is certainly positive because all that there must be in a metal piece in your piece is therefore complimented and continues. good job

Dark and well produced

I love the intro and the over all vocal tone it reminds me of bands similar to Type-O or Dark Melodic bands. Vocals are clear and the music is not over powering the vocals and it's not "oh metal song wait for the scream". Quite the opposite and I highly recommend checking it out.

Ancient feeling

the song Without a Sail from the band Strange New Dawn begins with a chorus of men describing a world written by this music. in this world there is a lot of veracity and truth - about life and being. Listen to this song and enjoy a really ancient feeling of what life is made from. This music describes a very honest way of thinking, follow as you like and you will build your own fantasy world within you, this tune supports this a lot. I enjoyed listening and a tell you there has do be more of such sound, i hope it will raise. Best wishes - the cows

Strange, yes but Operatically Stimulating

Symphonically masterful. This band has a great aspiration to be original and musically superior. I found myself emotionally drawn in and did not want it to end. I would have to give a 9 to originality especially the way the composition was mixed with a metallic edge giving the song a sinister edge which I believe was the over all intention possibly mirroring the precarious times we are in, or more so, where we are headed as a human race. An excellent effort and class "A" potential. The vocals, Operatic, Rhythm section very organized and transitional, and the percussion, thunderous.

very gothic

Without a Sail starts off with melody and gothic church harmonies in which are awesome. Then it goes to progressive gothic/doom metal then ends how it started. If gothic music is your thing then I strongly recommend this band. As for the song I give this a 4.3 out of 5

Cool Track, Flawed Recording...

Today we're gonna be looking at Strange New Dawn's "Without A Sail". The intro gave me an early Queensryche vibe and that vibe was solidified by the time the heavier part of the song kicked in. Although SND gives a tip of the hat the to the mighty 'ryche that isn't the sum total of their sound. I also got this really interesting Viking/folk metal impression as well. I think it was the chanting that did it. Let's go a little deeper into SND sound. Musically I almost felt an Enslaved "Monumension" era sound coming from the guitar, bass and drums. It didn't go full insanity but the combination of light/heavy and the eeriness of the guitar chords definitely added a certain "I don't know what" to the track that was pretty cool. The music and the vocal together gave SND a very unique sound which I can appreciate, it is hard to find your own voice in a crowded genre like metal and I think they did a pretty good job of carving out their own niche. That was the good news, here comes the critique. Although the vocals were interesting they need more polish. Some of the chanting is a little out of tune with the music and it's haphazard nature (and lack of any supporting harmonies) can get to you after a while. It's not that I don't like it, it's just that it needs a little more to be wholly convincing. The same thing can be said concerning the main vocal part. Some of it I really liked, other parts I felt could have used a little practice, overall the entire performance was good (and to be honest I'm nitpicking a little) but since the Metal genre is so competitive there is no room for imperfection (despite many opinions to the contrary) Since the vocals tend to be the most upfront and visible aspect of the music one must be especially careful about nailing the performance...it was good, but it could have been amazing. Musically I have no issue with the other instruments performance, they weren't "blow me away" but they did a compelling job of carrying my interest. Now time for more critiquing ;) The recording itself needs a little more love, the vocals sounded great but the rest of the instruments came across as pretty weak, especially the drums. They need to be thundering and powerful and the same thing can be said about the guitars and bass. While during the softer parts I like how sparse it sounded because it was haunting and bleak but when the heavy part kicks in you really noticed how it lacked any serious power. Musically awesome, but the production has to be better if you're serious about establishing yourself as a real player in the Metal scene. Overall I thought the track was solid and I made a point of critiquing certain aspects of the song to help the band get better and produce and even more killer piece of music. Strange New Dawn has got potential and it is clear that they know how to differentiate themselves in relation to other Metal bands but they need to tweak their recording setup to really get people to notice...All in all, great track guys...keep up the good work Christopher Carrion XXX

Great vocals

Where did you get those pipes! Very passionate vocals in this tune. Love the crescendo in mid song the best. The agony felt in the beginning made me curious to know how where this song was going but you really pulled through in the middle. Good job! I liked the guitar and tune overall, it was well arranged and had good flow throughout the entire song. Keep up the good work and I look forward to reviewing another of your awesome songs!

It's A Strange New Dawn in Norway

Well like the title of this bands name suggests this Metal or Progressive Metal band hailing from Brennåsen Norway really does sound like they are Heavy Metal warriors from Norway, right from the erie sounding beginning of their song entitled "Without a sail" starting with a very well delivered vocal part that sends me back in time, a time when Nordic warriors roamed the western European continent in wooden boats on journeys to other parts of that region, to a world that is very much different to the world as we would know of today. The lead vocal delivery is simply amazing and combined with other vocals tracked together definitely sets the tone, before long the song starts to build up and build up and as it does it's done very tastefully with amazing tasteful guitar work, this tasteful guitarist knows his or her craft extremely well with the use of dynamics in the song, so as to build up continues the Strange New Dawn drummer kicks in with a very tasteful double bass drumming that does not overshadow the bass and also guitar tracks keeping you "locked in tight" as you clearly can hear their vocalist deliver his story keeping myself locked in to continue on my audio journey to what sounds to me as story of loved warriors of Norway in a time long past nut not forgotten....I'n my mind Strange New Dawn delivered with this song and their musicianship on this song is without a doubt very well done..Great job guy's from Pauly co founder and guitarist for Firststrike (USA) .

Well done

Without a Sail seems to be a concept song, like, you can find a relationship between words and music. that's nice. I'd like to hear the song on a big stage, perhaps that's possible on day, Meanwhile i can stream this version, a good production.

Strange new dawn

I can definately see some potential for this band, the song is very well crafted, has a good crescendo and the singing is excellent , good melody and arrangement, it reminds a little of old Manowar, the only flaw is the production, in my opinion, I don't like the guitars sound and I think they are too low in the mix and the whole thing could have been mixed better. Anyway a very promising track.
