Bio of the Artist
Franken Squid (Perna) and DJ McSkwidliver (McIvor) have been collaborators in many art mediums since 1984 when they first met in B.C.'s Okanagan Valley. In 1988 they published the first of a comicbook series called 'The Preservation of Obscurity' under the collective moniker 'Lump of Squid' with fellow artist Shawn Thomas. The comicbook parties became notorious and gained a life of their own, featuring many hot local musicians and bands. From the comicbook sprang live radio comic readings with improvised effects and spontaneous ad lib, and televised puppet shows in Nathan Phillips Square.
During the early 90's another collective evolved for the Lollapolluza concerts called 'Lumpapolluza' which featured interactive water sculpture and crowd participation live mural painting.
McSkwidLiver appeared in an experimental band 'Gimmick and Catastrophy' utilizing multimedia tools of the mid 90's, and saw the emergence of the PC as a musical tool and instument.
Franken Squid integrated a 'Boomarang' sampler into his DJ tools and began playing with the 'Jason Kenemy Trio' adding an electronic manipulation element to the unique Jazz sound.
Music has always been a common bond between these two, and so when a seasoned veteran of the music industry like 'Longo' who has toured with 'the Look People' and Sarah Craig can just jump in and tie it all together, it is sometimes hard to believe that everything is improvised in one take.
Listen for yourself...
