| | | | | | | | | | | | Bio of the Artist | Kieran Leigh is quirky, fragile, tough, sexy, and smart. She knows how to communicate lyrically and melodically. Her vocal approach is laid back and sultry, one of under-singing reminiscent of a female version or Beck and Suzanne Vega, yet she can turn it on like Vedder, and Crow. Kieran’s Under the Big Top offers something both for listeners of rock, and indie-elite audiences. While many of her songs on Under The Big Top fall neatly into the genre of pop, upon closer examination, this is not music for the pop simple. Each track assumes its own sonic identity, and what unites the fifteen songs is Leigh’s poignant honesty and her knack for self deprecation. This album is intimate, personal, and the kaleidoscopic images that come to mind make it eccentrically offbeat yet completely consuming, drudging the bottom of internal emotions, only to lift back up to a point of inspiration. “Okay, yeah, so I’ve had a few rough patches in life. But, I try everyday to be a good person and to lift up myself and those around me, to connect with this great universe and to improve. So if things go south, I try to remember that north is just a shift-of-the-gaze away.”
Kieran’s songs are wrought with longing, create vivid images of commitment-phobes, and display somewhat bizarre auditory snippets she’d captured from her dreams. Kieran’s Under the Big Top is largely comprised of songs that came to her during sleep.
The musicality on her new album is worth its weight in gold, as it is predominantly accompanied by world class musicians such as keyboardist, Patrick Warren, who has contributed to the works of The Bob Dylan, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fiona Apple, Springsteen, Aimee Mann, and Neil Diamond.
On Under the Big Top, Kieran often displays indications of self-examination, tinged with darkness and yet she leaves us with the constant reminder of hope. “There were a lot of years of strife and walking the tightrope. In hindsight, it’s been a cursed blessing in a way. I don't think anyone expected me to actually do it, but, here I am."
