Influenced heavily by the 80s era, J.T. Johnson officially began telling his life story through music in 2006 with the formation of his own record label, J.T. Productions/Records, LLC. For the past six years, he’s been busy working in his studio, writing, producing, recording music, and turning his dream into a reality. Music is tough gig though, and J.T. is the first one to admit it. He’s made many sacrifices to get started, but he’s put in his dues by working two jobs and spending endless nights in the studio to make it happen. It’s taken a long time, but his hard work is finally paying off. “The music industry is ninety percent business and ten percent talent,” J.T. admits. “There are a lot of snakes out there that want to take credit for your work, so you have to know what you’re doing.” J.T. funded his business by being a top car salesman with Kia Gossett Motors in Memphis. He’s a true businessman at heart, and his passion and tenacity has helped him tremendously in the music industry. When he first started out, J.T. formulated an online radio station called J.T. Johnson Radio, which helped draw listeners to his songs. From there, he was able to start a small fan base so his name would be more recognizable when everything came together. His most recent track, titled I’m Doing Me, is a Memphis flavored R&B song released through J.T. Productions. You can also see his videos on YouTube at “J.T. Johnson I’m Doing Me Live”, Most of J.T.’s lyrics are based on his life, his relationships, his experiences, and even his mistakes. “I believe that dreams really can come true, you just have to believe in yourself,” J.T. said, who learned the art of producing through mentor Robert Jackson. With the help of Jackson and Jackson’s lawyer, the two of them helped J.T. formulate his label. He also credits Homer Banks, another great mentor and one of the great writers from Stax Records who trained him on how to write music. J.T. also has his own website dedicated to the promotion of his record label and music. There you’ll find some interesting history, his background, and how he got started in the business. His candid bio speaks of some of his proudest work and those he has collaborated with in the past, including members of the Otis Redding Band and the Bar-Kays. You can also listen to some of his tracks and read some press on his record label. J.T. also . Admitting that his free time is spent writing music, his mind is always on his work. It’s a passion, it’s a sickness, but it’s his, it’s all his, and he couldn’t be happier.
