Woman of Mine - real Americana by John Martin

Helpful

This song "Woman of Mine", performed by John Martin, got the real Americana Country music feeling, what we used to call "country rock" or even "folk rock" some years ago! It´s a story packed into the full country guitar sound, rock´n´roll rhythm and guitar solos and bridges! Just join the chorus, sing along to John´s great voice, and get up and dance in the barn or honky-tonk.. well, at least it got me hammering sticks on the table, and I am sure this song deserves some good airplay and, of course, more gigs and festivals on stage - so John Martin, keep on rockin´!

John Martin brings you Woman of Mine and his effort has a certain Bob Dylan kind of feel in his voice. Musically the song is an upbeat love song and there is plenty of spirit in his work. The recording for some reason feels like it could be 'larger than life' but doesn't sound like it was recorded with a great deal of stereo width. Due to this one factor there seems to be a lack of presence in the recording that could have brought the score up higher. All in all it is an honest effort for an honest song with no pretention.

Overall I like the song. As a singer/songwriter I recommend to redo the lead guitar. On this mix it is playing over the vocals and at times it is hard to keep track of the vocal line. The song moves and the Bass line is interesting.

A delightful, dance-able country song about real life that is sure to put a smile on your face and have you tapping your foot and singing along. The lyrics are simple, warm, flowing and easy to remember. It starts with an interesting and catchy bass hook that puts you in dancing mood. This is followed by a simple bass line, drum and guitar arrangement that supports the vocals and takes you through the whole piece at a dancing pace. This is a very nice wholesome country “love” song that is full of gratitude, warmth and cheerful spirits. (So hold on to your partner and dance.)

I like the bass, the lyrics and the melody a lot. I know you said this is a rough version, so I don't know what you have planned for the album version. This song reminds me of an old country tune. I would love to hear some harmony and background vocals, because it's a little drab and it needs to be fuller. You have a nice voice for this genre. Keep it up!

Good lyrics. I can live in that song, for I was a trucker for 3 years in the 80's. It's a rough life. So, writing a song that can relate to a big part of the music listeners is part of song writing. The production needs some work, but all and all it's a good song.

First the song. In my opinion a decision will need to be made as to whether you want this piece to be a live performance dance number or one that is to be promoted for air play on the commercial market. As a dance performance number it is lively, upbeat and works well as is. If however you want it to be presented as a commercial piece you may want to consider some rework to the melody. the lyrics are good but the melody can get lost due to sounding like a many other songs over the years. It needs something for the listener's ears to recognize its own unique sound. The vocals are good but you may wish to consider backing off on the reverb some. For me the less effected the vocal the better. The music track is executed well but I am on the fence about the musical bridge in the second half of the song. It works well for a dance presentation but may be a little long for an air play number. I realize you are in the rough in stages so if you do plan to make adjustments now is the time. I liked the number and appreciate the opportunity to review your work. Best of luck with it. Regards Paul Springfield

There a certain musicians, songwriters, vocals, guitar pickers that have there own certain distinct sound. As of the first note for whatever reason you know it's them. Not only that but their songs make one feel a certain way....happy....yes, even the slow ballads make you feel peaceful inside. I might also add that it's very difficult to be distinct in this day and age. There are many excellent musicians that are technically right on the money. There are some excellent male vocalists - some I've heard right here on numberonemusic - the problem is, as good as they are I can't differentiate between these truly excellent singers and the many on country radio that sound just the same. All that being said it is my opinion that John Martin - writes, plays, sings from a spot that is unique and gives him a sound all his own. This is something that I both appreciate and like very much. 'Woman of Mine' is another example of what sets John apart from so many others in the business.
