Great sultry, bluesy song!

This is a wonderful, sad blues ballad. Elana Watson sings this with the raw emotion of someone who has lived the lyrics. I could listen to her smooth, sultry voice all day. I highly recommend this song and Elana Watson.

Lovely blues in the jazz vein

That slow blues jazz burn that makes you melt into the couch with a glass of wine. Elana has a wonderful, smokey voice that suits the song so well and she has wonderful accompanists. The piano is classic jazz taking on blues without being so far into the weeds, it's the perfect mix for me. And the pianist and bassist played so well together it's like instruments played by one mind. The drummer kept it all in that perfect space as well. Great job Elana.

Pro Cover Of A Jazz Standard

This is a professional performance of a slow and mournful jazz ballad. I've scanned through my library I have over 60 recordings of this tune ranging from Núria Feliu singing in Catalan with a trio led by Lou Bennett, (playing piano)- to versions by American artists Eric Dolphy, Rollins, Coltrane, Miles etc. Also, the classic Dinah Washington, Billie Holliday versions, of course. I scanned through my collection and located a version which I believe most closely matched the vocal timbre and feel of Ms. Watson and her piano trio. I located a version by the Nannie Porres Kvartett, (which actually sounds like a piano trio with vocals). Ms. Watson's version compares favorably to the Nannie Porres Kvartett's version. Nannie Porres' cultural significance as a vocalist has been recognized in Sweden, where she was awarded a lifelong artists salary for artistic activity of high quality and great importance for Swedish cultural life. So, Ms. Watson and her trio do a fine interpretation of this standard. Vocals are emotively delivered in Ms. Watson's take on the tune. There's some fine jazz piano soloing, some nice bass moments and the percussion is rock solid. Nice job.

fantastic jazz voice

a wonderful and enchanting voice sings absolutely perfectly intoned a first class jazz standard. Elana sings this ballad so sensitively and passionately that you immediately feel like you're in a New York jazz club, surrendering and indulging in the wonderful music. The band also plays convincingly and absolutely true to the style. The piano improvisation is beautiful and puts the icing on the cake for Elana's singing, complementing her voice just right. The bass and drums are exactly as they should be, bringing calm and openness and letting the ballad just flow away.... just listen and enjoy!!!

Very nice, a few musical suggestions to have in mind

Hello Elana, you have a nice timbre to your voice. I have some arranging suggestions that could help the listeners stay compelled by your performance. I have to say, this is one of my favorite songs and lyric. I've had the pleasure of touring with the great singer Diane Reeves, and listening to her interpretations nightly was very inspiring. Anyways, for the intro, what could be cool is for you to start your wordless vocal acapella and then have the piano come in. I would do this rubato, even maybe when you sing the first A. When you're in a tempo from the very beginning of a ballad, instead of letting it evolve into a tempo, it doesn't sound as organic as it could. I would suggest that the A section be a little simpler in the melody and chord changes. It is such a dramatic lyric that if you perform it simply, it would have a bigger impact. This would also make your inflections and deviations on the bridge much more effective. This also applies to the harmonic movement of the chords. This note is for your rhythm section. When you come out of the melody into the solo, it needs more of a shift than just adding the ride cymbal. I'd try a slow swinging 4/4. Or breaking it down dynamically and letting it grow. The solo section stays at the same dynamic as your melody. The bridge out sounds good, but you will need to agree on the ending. Stretching out the last phrase and ending it there would be fine. If you're going to set up a vamp, it needs to be distinguished and more thought out with the rhythm section. It all sounds really good and it was really nice to listen to you. All the best, -Ted

Blue melancholy classic

There’s a rich, dark and bitter sweet feeling in the surreal mood the performers are creating. It’s tasty and brushes the emotion with a heavy gentle wave. Beautiful and sad, sensible, melancholy.

Magnificent

My jazz knowledge comes from family members like my grandmother and all of her children. Jazz for Black Americans is our only music which was created from Black Folk's and in today's time it's a lot of people who don't have a clue. I admire you for making jazz. What all instruments do you have or play currently? Do you read and write music? Have you been to America? If your interested in coming to Las Vegas NV to perform Infront of hundreds passing through, let me know? I have a street performers permit to display your talent

Deeper gorgeous Voice

This interpretation is so gorgeous and profound that it really gave me the idea of what actually cannot know what love is. The swinging and rhythm "trascinato" not only transcends the musical idea but above all transmits the soul of this song to the listener. The voice is very particular and ranges from a deep melancholy dictated by a pronounced and present timbre in the initial improvisation and in the exposition of the theme to then give an idea of opening in the finale. The great harmony of the group and the empathy and mutual listening makes this song very pleasant and engaging to listen to.

Nice voice!

Gran bella voce…calda al punto giusto, perfetta per gli standard degli anni sessanta….ma anche 30/40…si sente il profumo dei sottoscala di new york,l’odore dei sigari e del whisky di marca …buona musica!

Elana Watson's "You Don't Know What Love Is'!

from the scatting in the beginning of the song, it takes on a secular tone when we notice that Elana is from Jerusalem, Israel. Her voice is very forceful, strong and pure (in the jazz sense). Her backing instrumentation of piano, bass and drums is very subtile, capable and fluid as a backing unit with a bonus of free improvisation. It harkens back to the early female torch vocalists of the 30's and 40's. I recommend this.

ELANA WATSON You Don't Know What Love Is

One of my favorite songs! "You Don't Know What Love Is" continues to express the bewilderment of lovers who stray. I first heard this song in the late 70's. I was instantly drawn to the story. Elana's version is true to the melody and she has a sweet band. If you love trad jazz this one is for you!! With a voice like a candy cane, Ms. Watson makes it clear she understands what love is and sings with clarity and panache. A terrific version, and add it to your collection. Excellent soloing by the band and great ensemble work.
