Kick ass traditional country song

Helpful

If I could give this song 10 stars I would. Its similar to Johnny Cash's songs but with a twist, Col Custer sings with a British accent! THe banjo and mandolin are fantastic. It sounds like a cross between traditional American Country music and Celtic music. Great arrangement, fun uplifting beat, great guitar solo, great lyrics tell a story. Guaranteed to make you smile!

Good Railroad Song

Helpful

I listened to this song when I saw the word Rail-Roads and was pleasantly surprised by the easy going foot tapping style of Col Reb Custer as he sang his way through his self written composition. At first I was reminded of the song Wreck Of The 'ol '97 - and that is good comparison. Maybe a little more guitar solo would be a good extra to put it there somewhere Reb? Good luck with your song and future numbers you may write in the future, keep it country buddy! regards, Johnny Ramone of Angel International Management.

Train keeps a rollin'

Col. Reb Custer brings us Country Rail-Roads, an uber country diddy with a classic fundamental tone. From a listener's perspective it has all the classic points and is an upbeat tune that maintains its energy throughout the song. From a producer's perspective I do not like the widening technique used on the lead vocal, but I do very much like how the backup vocals seemed to glue together and become a solid platform for the chorus. Also from a mastering standpoint I feel that a bit too much compression/limiting was applied as the dynamic range feels like a two by four against your head on the back beat. But those are subjective choices in mixing and mastering.

Wow, a trip talking about the iron horse and country railroads. Listening to this song, I feel that I am riding on the iron horse. Like the lead guitar, banjo, drums, the song keeps you wanting to hum along with it, tapping your feet. Do I hear a fiddle or are they keyboards? Either way I like the lyric and the singing is good. I have not heard a song about county railroads like the way the Colonel did this. Songedge

I wanna ride this train!

A fine effort by the Colonel here. This song is very well written, with a very memerable hook. The story told in simple terms and a nice straight ahead melody. The record sounds well recorded...a nice mix and master. I like the singers voice and the unison background vocal fits this song really well. I even like the hint of a German accent adds a different flavor to this county/Americana style song. Best of luck with this one! DW

Australian Expression of an American Theme

This is a traditional folk song that is singable and chooses to believe it doesn't have to rhyme. The song centers on a traditional theme: trains and even refers to a train as an "iron horse". This will make sense to us "older" people and may even cause a bit of nostalgia. This seems to be written by decision rather then inspiration. If I didn't know about trains, I would wonder what is the reason - the point. It is like saying, "There's a horse over there. Here is our nick-name for "horse". People used to ride them." As a listener, I look for a deeper meaning - perhaps a story - an emotion. What about trains? What was it like being on one? I listened to this song twice. This song dedicates itself to the engineer, then mentions the tracklayers and the conductor without telling you about the engineer. The passengers are mentioned. The trains went north and south and east and west ... to Where? Mountains? Cities? Plains or along rivers? Was it dangerous? Happy? Comfortable? Did they go through the snow or rained out floods? What about trains back at the time of the "Iron Horse". That term was coined by the American Indian. Because the trains were powered by coal, they spewed black smoke. You could here them coming for miles and the job of Breakman was the most dangerous. The Breakman stopped the train by pulling a large lever. I choose to believe that Col. Reb Custer knows about and likes the train culture and history of our American West. The song is certainly a happy song enthusiastically backed by an almost Australian style accompaniment. "The Iron Horse" is an uniquely American theme, so the accompaniment doesn't support the theme. This review may be discouraging. It is obvious that the performers cared enough to accomplish a decent production, so I direct their attention to the song. It needs a story, color, emotional content and some sort of clever twist. The style must support the theme and there must be a progression of power that holds the listener. Don't give up. Try again.

Riding the rails

Helpful

A cute catchy little tune about riding the rails. I could actually hear this playing in the background of a Thomas the train short. The picking of the banjo and strumming of guitars mixed with the sweet melody the lead guitar plays make it a delightfully innocent happy tune. Good mix, good arrangement. I know it has all the components of a classic country song, however the accent of the singer gives the song more of an irish folk song sound.

Well this track has a fun travelling feel like a train song would almost be expected to have. Vocals are complimentary even though melody wise its not a huge vocal stretch. Definitely driven by a solid two four polka beat rhythm which makes you want to get up and move your feet. Not the tightest arrangement but a solid fun recording nonetheless.

I hear a really good vibe on this song. It reminds me all the time I've spent on the road, watching the sun rising up while I was driving, you know, that moment when the sky is turning orange and when the fields are brown !
