| | | | | | | | | | | | Bio of the Artist | South Africa is a musical enigma…and a treasure chest because of it. The people sing when they’re happy and when they’re protesting. Cultures abound like explosions so it’s not surprising to find an Afrikaans musician (wearing rainbow colored pants) selecting English from the nine official languages as his vehicle to the world. Then again, the music is so damned good the world may be surprised into jumping up and down at the same time.
BOON is a consummate entertainer and songwriter invigorating the emotions of his listeners. The music is powerful and always enriched with melody. BOON’s zany stage antics ensure him as a crowd pleaser.
MUSIC TRAINING BOON’s passion and aptitude was clearly evident when he started playing the piano at the age of 6. 2 years later, he was breathing life into a trumpet. This was quickly followed by 5 flute forms. With young adulthood, he studied jazz and classical piano for 4 years. Always inquisitive and in love with the music as one concept with many limbs, he learnt the guitar and undertook vocal training for 8 years. Memorizing over 100 cover songs became lessons into understanding the methods of the greatest artists of all time.
In his opinion, all of this was one big lesson in melody perception, lyric formatting and, ultimately, delivering the power of perfect song!
MUSIC STRENGTH To support his studies, musical equipment purchases and ultimate goal of success as an original artist, BOON chose to enter the tough cover circuit as a member of several bands and as a solo artist. This grueling schedule proved his stamina! Singing 30-35 songs 4-5 times per week for 5 years (over 200 performances per year) is a feat only for the super strong.
MUSIC SAVY Understanding the music industry is a vital aspect of being a performer. Boon is an avid reader of respected books on the subject. Realising the benefits of marketing and hard work, Boon has taken on the role of agent for most of the bands he’s worked with. In addition to a higher income, he learnt how to deal not only with fans but venue and festival owners as well. Ever aware of the benefits of hard work and giving back, Boon started music workshops for teenagers and has delivered lessons for the past 5 years. Additionally, he bought printers, hired a staff member, and replicates CDs for other artists. As the front man for the band Movie55, he realised the power of public relations and is always accessible to fans. A benefit of this was Boon personally selling R80 000 (over 1000 CDs) of merchandise during 2006 and 2007.
Despite the world’s hero worship of problem plagued artists who became more famous with their self-induced deaths, Boon realizes that “drug free” is the best policy if he is to deliver his best. Honesty walks hand in hand.
MUSIC PROJECTS BOON currently fronts the energetic band Dakota whilst simultaneously expanding his solo, acoustic career. Most fans came to know him through the highly popular Movie55 which attained vast, national radio play, scoring several top ten and number one rock ‘n roll hits. Ever extending his boundaries, BOON is currently in studio recording dance tracks.
THE MUSIC The themes of BOON’s music relate down-to-earth, everyday life, running the full gamut from kissing to loneliness, birth to death. No matter what form the songs are delivered in, it’s always music for the masses.
Outside of collaborations, sole-composed songs played on radio include:
‘Is Anyone In There?’ ‘Kiss Me’ ‘Punk From The UK’ ‘Rat Race’
In March 2008, he will release 3 tracks of varying genres under three different project names. The demo, ‘Silent Scream’ is currently at #6 on www.SAMP3.com.
