Bill Richards is an American singer-songwriter and musician from Dothan, Alabama. Born William Amos Richards, Jr. in 1965 in Selma, Alabama, Bills family relocated to the Dothan area when he was five years old. At the age of ten, a friend introduced him to the acoustic guitar. He learned his first three chords, and was hooked. By age 12 he had written the first of many country songs. As a teen, Bill began playing bass and singing lead vocals in various bar bands. He played many genres including rock, metal, and blues, but country music always kept calling his name. Bill lists his influences as Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Jr, Toby Keith, and Lynyrd Skynyrd among others.
At age 21 Bill married his high school sweetheart, Tammy. They are still married today. They were blessed with two wonderful children, Jeff and Chelsea.
The next few years were spent playing in local country/rock cover bands. He was fortunate enough to be the front man/bassist in two of the area’s most popular bands (Almost Country and Stray Bullet) for several years. During this time, he would pen original songs occasionally, but most of his efforts were spent honing his skills as a cover artist.
As the children grew older, family life beckoned, and Bill decided to hang up his guitar to coach youth league sports and spend as much time as possible with the family.
Fast forward to 2014… Instead of performing, Bill is now concentrating on songwriting, and spending plenty of time with his grandchildren. Family and God have always been very important to him.
Currently, he writes every day, and performs, records, and masters the product in his home studio. Bill describes his lyrics as “cheeky but real”. Most of his songs are lighthearted and easy to relate to, but he also touches on very serious and sometimes sad subjects. If you are a fan of “real” country music, you are sure to find something in the catalog to relate to. Give him a listen. Whether you find yourself laughing, crying or tapping your toes, emotions will certainly be stirred.
